Heartburn or pyrosis is a painful or burning sensation in the esophagus, just below the breastbone caused by regurgitation of gastric acid. The pain often rises in the chest and may radiate to the neck, throat, or angle of the jaw. Heartburn is also identified as one of the causes of chronic cough, and may even mimic asthma. Despite its name, heartburn actually has nothing to do with the heart. It is so called because of a burning sensation of the breastbone where the heart is located although some heart problems do have a similar sensation to heartburn. Compounding the confusion is the fact that hydrochloric acid from the stomach comes back up the esophagus because of a problem with the cardiac sphincter, a valve which misleadingly contains the word "cardiac" (an adjective referring to the heart) in its name.

Acid Reflux Can Change the Sound of Your Voice

Acid Reflux is also known as heartburn and can cause problems for you over time if its not treated. There are some things that you probably never think about acid reflux causing.

Having Acid Reflux can change the sound of your voice. The acid from your stomach can back up into your throat and can cause your vocal cords to swell and over time can change the sound of your voice and make your voice sound hoarse. This is done by the acid irritating the vocal cords and keeping them irritated.

You may not have even known that you had this disease till people start telling you that you sound sick and that your voice is hoarse. Usually other people will be the first ones to tell you that your voice sounds hoarse, you are so used to the way your voice sounds to yourself that you will not even notice. It will come across as raspy and scratchy yet may not even hurt you to talk.

There may be other signs that your vocal cords are being irritated, you may feel like there is a lump in your throat and you may have some problems swallowing, but these symptoms can be minor except that feeling of the thickness in your throat. This may feel worse after eating really spicy foods but won't usually last long. But overtime it can gradually happen and you may not really be aware of it.

If you have people starting to tell you that your voice sounds different or feel a thickness in your throat you may have acid reflux disease and should see a physician to have it checked out as soon as possible.
